12-Week Men’s Aftercare Programme

The Men’s Aftercare Programme provides structured follow-on support for men who have completed the One-Week Men’s Intensive Programme or undertaken sufficient individual therapy and recovery work.

The period following an intensive can be important. Participants may leave with increased awareness, a clearer understanding of their behaviour and a recovery plan, but this work needs to be applied and strengthened in everyday life.

The Aftercare Programme helps participants consolidate what they have learned, maintain their recovery and continue developing the emotional and relational changes begun during earlier treatment.

The Purpose of Aftercare

The programme combines psychoeducation, group process, structured reflection and recovery tasks. It provides continuity, accountability and support while participants begin putting their recovery plans into practice.

Areas of focus may include:

  • Maintaining recovery and recognising warning signs
  • Applying relapse-prevention strategies
  • Understanding emotional and situational triggers
  • Developing honesty and accountability
  • Managing shame without avoiding responsibility
  • Strengthening emotional regulation
  • Continuing work on trauma and earlier experiences
  • Developing healthier boundaries
  • Addressing the impact of behaviour on partners and families
  • Moving towards healthier intimacy and sexuality
  • Building an appropriate support network
  • Responding constructively to setbacks

The group offers participants an opportunity to discuss current difficulties, receive feedback and learn from other men who are also working to maintain change.

Programme Structure

The Aftercare Programme runs for 12 weeks, with one session each Wednesday evening from 6.30pm to 8.00pm.

The programme operates on a rolling basis. Admission is subject to assessment, suitability and availability within the group.

Each session may include:

  • Psychoeducational teaching
  • Facilitated group discussion
  • Recovery-focused group work
  • Structured reflection
  • Practical and written tasks
  • Review of individual recovery goals

Attendance at a 12-step fellowship or another recovery-support community may also be helpful for some participants. The Aftercare Programme can complement these forms of support but does not require every participant to follow the same recovery pathway.

Joining the Programme

Participation begins with an individual assessment. This allows us to consider your current recovery, previous treatment, support needs and readiness to participate in a group.

Following the 12-week programme, some participants may continue with individual therapy, community-based recovery support or the longer-term Heroic Men’s Psychotherapy and Recovery Group.
